The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the U.S. Army Garrison Fire Department at Pōhakuloa Training Area (PTA Fire), and Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision on Daniel K. Inouye Highway (or Saddle Road/Highway 200) near the Pōhakuloa Training Area Tuesday morning (March 30th).
The initial call came in at 6:19 am Tuesday morning and HFD Crews from the Waikoloa and Waimea Fire Station along with Chopper 2, PTA Fire (Company 50), and HPD Officers from the South Hilo Patrol responded to the scene located at the 36.7-mile marker on Highway 200 in Pōhakuloa.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in that a single-vehicle (described as Jeep Cherokee) had overtaken another vehicle in passing zone at an unknown speed and later lost control and rolling over approximately 3 times before coming to a rest about 10-feet from Highway 200. The occupant of the vehicle (described as a female in her 30s) was reported to be entrapped within the vehicle and yelling for help prior to emergency crews arrived at the scene.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, PTA Fire personnel immediately worked to extricate the female patient utilizing Jaws of Life. Once the patient was extricated PTA and HFD Medics immediately began medical treatment and prepared her for transport to the hospital via Chopper 2. HFD Chopper 2 then transported the female patient to the North Hawaii Community Hospital in serious condition for further medical treatment.
HPD continues to investigate the incident.
