Fire causes damage to a kitchen at a residence in Pana'ewa Tuesday afternoon (June 2nd).

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a residential structure fire in Pana'ewa Tuesday afternoon (June 2nd).
The initial call came in at 2:46 pm Tuesday afternoon and HFD crews from the Haihai, Central, and Kea'au Fire Stations along with Battalion 1 and HPD officers from the South Hilo Patrol responded to the scene located 10 block of East Mamaki Street in Pana'ewa.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, the occupant of the residence report fire coming from a light fixture within the kitchen area of the residence and was spreading to the floor area with flames of about 3-4 feet high reported. Occupants had safely evacuated and awaited the arrival of emergency crews.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD crews found light smoke coming from the windows and immediately made entry into the residence and were able to have the fire under control and extinguished minutes after arriving on the scene with the use of a 20lb extinguisher. HFD crews did a quick assessment around the residence and determined the fire didn't spread into a crawl space of the residence.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation and no injuries were reported in this incident.
