The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision on Highway 19 (Mamalahoa Highway) near Kapehu Camp in North Hilo Saturday morning (December 5th).
The initial call came in at 10:55 am Saturday morning and HFD Crews from the Laupāhoehoe and Honoka'a Fire Stations along with HPD Officers from North Hilo and Hamakua Patrol responded to the scene located on Highway 19 near the 23-mile marker (or north of Kapehu Stream bridge) in North Hilo.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came into emergency crews reporting a single motorcycle with two riders aboard (described as a male in his 60s and a female in her 50s) had lost control on Highway 19 and slid off the roadway just before the Kapehu Stream bridge. Both riders had suffered serious injuries and bystanders were providing basic medical aid until emergency crews arrived at the scene.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD crews then took over medical care of the two riders at the scene. As a precaution, HPD Officers had temporarily closed Highway 19 near Kapehu Camp in both directions while emergency crews worked at the scene.
HFD Medics then transported the two riders to the Hilo Medical Center in serious condition for further medical treatment. Highway 19 was later reopened to all traffic just before 11:35 am late Saturday afternoon.
HPD continues to investigate the collision.
