The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a vehicle fire on Highway 190 (Māmalahoa Highway) in the area of the Pu'uwa'awa'a Ranch (Ahupua'a) in North Kona early Sunday morning (May 2nd).

The initial call came in at 3:33 am Sunday morning and HFD Crews from the Makalei and Waikoloa Fire Stations along with HPD Officers from the Kona Patrol responded to the scene located on Highway 190 just south of the 25-mile marker in the area of the Pu'uwa'awa'a Ranch.

Upon the arrival of the emergency crew, a report came in from the driver of a double fuel tanker truck, had pulled to the makai shoulder of Highway 190 near the 25-mile marker, reporting a fire coming from the rear wheels of the trailer. The driver attempted to extinguish fire utilizing a fire extinguisher, however, was unsuccessful and safely evacuated away from the semi and trailer awaiting the arrival of emergency crews. The fire was slowly spreading to nearby brush along Highway 190. It was noted the trailer was carrying approximately 9,000 gallons of fuel at the incident.

Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Crews immediately worked to extinguish the fire to the rear wheel of trailers and surrounding brush. Within minutes of arriving at the scene, HFD Crews quickly had the fire extinguished and contained to the rear wheels of the trailer and a small area of brush near the trailer. The driver of the double fuel tanker was uninjured.

Upon further investigation, HFD crews determined the fire did not compromise the integrity of the fuel trailer and were in communication with the fuel company to get the trailer towed.

As a precaution, HPD Officers had temporarily closed Highway 190 between the 25 to 26-mile marker while HFD Crews worked to extinguish the fire and declare the scene was safe.

All lanes of Highway 190 were reopened just after 5:00 am Sunday morning.
