The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a structure fire at a residence in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision in Puna Sunday evening (December 8th).
The initial call came in at 6:26 pm Sunday evening and crews from the Paradise Park, Pahoa, and Kea'au Fire Stations along with Battalion 1, volunteers from the Hawaiian Paradise Park station, and HPD officers from the Puna Patrol responded to the scene located at the 15-1700 block of 15th Avenue in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision.
Upon the arrival of HFD crews, reports came in from residences in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision reported heavy smoke and large flames visible coming from a residence on 15th Avenue. Neighbors reported the same residence previously damaged in structure fire back in late November was reported to be fully engulfed in flames and confirmed no one was in the structure.
Once HFD crews arrived on scene, they found the structure fully engulfed in flames and immediately went into a defensive and offensive fire attack mode to gain control fire. Due to the limited water supply at the scene, HFD crews utilized two tankers (one from the Pahoa Fire Station and one from Hawaiian Paradise Park volunteer station) to haul water to the scene from a water supply source located outside of the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. Engines on scene were also utilized to haul water as well.
Crews had the fire under control at approximately 7:30 pm Sunday evening and were conducting overhaul and mop-up operations. HFD crews later declared the fire fully extinguished at 9:04 pm on Sunday evening.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
