House destroy in a late evening fire in Volcano Village.
The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a structure fire on Kalaninauli Road in Volcano Village that was reported late Wednesay evening (May 1st).
The initial call came in at 11:37 pm Wednesday evening and crews from the Volcano, Kea'au, Pahoa (Tanker 10) , and Central (Tanker 1) Fire Stations along with Battalion 1 and volunteers from Volcano Village responded to the scene. Upon the arrival of HFD crews, neighbors reported the structure (approximately 1,200 feet in size) was fully engulfed with flames coming from the top floor of the two-story residential structure. Neighbors also confirmed all occupants including pets had safely evacuated the structure with no injuries.
Once HFD crews arrived on scene, they immediately worked get the fire under control. Due the limited water supply at the scene, HFD utilized Engines and Tankers to shuttle water to and from a water source located in Mountain View. Crews also had traverse a narrow one lane road as well to access the fire's location. HELCO assisted HFD with de-energizing power lines to the structure.
Fire was declared under control at 12:43 am Thursday morning (May 2nd). The cause of the fire remains under investigation and caused an estimate of $180,000 in damage.
