The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to report of a structure fire in the Nanawale Estates subdivision late Tuesday evening (April 28th).

The initial call came in at 11:39 pm Tuesday evening and HFD crews from the Pahoa and Paradise Park Fire Stations along with HPD officers from the Puna Patrol responded to the scene located at the 14-3400 block of Shell Road in the Nanawale Estates subdivision in Puna.

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, neighbors reported hearing a loud bang and later saw flames coming from the structure (described as 20'x20' single-story unpermitted structure) at that property. It was not known at the time if anyone had occupied the structure at the fire.

Once HFD and HPD crews arrived at the scene, they found the unpermitted structure to be fully engulfed in flames and HFD personnel immediately worked to gain control of the fire. HFD crews were able to have the fire under control and extinguished at 12:06 am Wednesday morning (April 29th). At last check, HFD crews were still on scene completing wet down and overhaul operations.

No injuries have been reported and HFD Fire Prevention Bureau Inspector was en-route to the scene to begin their investigation into the cause of the fire.
