The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a gunshot victim at a residence on North Kulani Road in Mountain View, Puna Tuesday afternoon (August 25th).
The initial call came in at 12:50 pm Tuesday afternoon and HFD crews from the Kea'au Fire Station along with HPD officers from the Puna Patrol and the Criminal Investigation Section (CIS) responded to the scene located at the 17-7600 block of North Kulani Road in Mountain View, Puna.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in that victim (described as a male in his 20's) suffered an apparent life-threatening gunshot wound and the suspect was reported to have left the scene following the shooting. Bystanders who heard the shooting began providing life-saving measures until emergency crews arrived at the scene.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medics immediately took over life-saving measures and later transported the victim to the Hilo Medical Center in extremely critical condition. However, HIRSC Team has learned and confirmed the victim had later succumbed to his injuries.
HPD officers immediately closed North Kulani Road above Highway 11 (Volcano Highway) in both directions, while officers from CIS immediately began their investigation into the incident and patrol officers in Puna and South Hilo continued searching for the suspect in the surrounding area and roadways.
HPD will release further details on the incident and suspect at a later time as officers are still on scene conducting their initial investigation.
