The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a three-vehicle collision on Highway 11 (Volcano Highway) near Volcano Village late Friday morning (December 18th).

The initial call came in at 11:56 am Friday morning and HFD crews from the Volcano and Kea’au Fire Stations along with HPD Officers from the Puna and Ka'ū Patrols responded to the scene located just south of the intersection with Highway 11 and Ali’i Anela Street in Volcano.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came that three vehicles (being described as Gray Toyota 4Runner, Tan Toyota Tacoma, and Tan Toyota Corolla) had collided on Highway 11 at the intersection of Ali’i Anela Street in Volcano. One of the vehicles involved was a subsidized police vehicle and the sedan suffered major damage as a result of the collision. Bystanders including the officer-involved in the collision immediately worked to provide basic medical aid to the occupant of the other vehicle (described as female in her 30s) until HFD Medics arrived at the scene.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medics took over medical care of the female occupant in the sedan and also began a medical assessment of the officer involved in the collision and the operator of the pickup, however, the operator of the pickup and the HPD Officer was uninjured at the scene and did not require further medical treatment.
HFD Medics later then transported the female to the Hilo Medical Center in serious condition for further medical treatment.
HPD continues to investigate the collision.
