Puna Information Update for February 4th, 2020

Fire destroys a two-story residence in the Eden Roc Subdivision in Mountain View Tuesday evening (February 4th).

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a residential structure fire in the Eden Roc subdivision in Mountain View Tuesday evening (February 4th).

The initial call came in 8:17 pm Tuesday evening and HFD crews from the Kea'au, Volcano, Haihai, Pahoa (Tanker 10), and Central (Tanker 1) Fire Stations along with Battalion 1 responded to the scene located at the 11-1800 block of Kolea Street in the Eden Roc subdivision in Mountain View.

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, neighbors reported the residence (described as a two-story single-family dwelling) was found fully engulfed with heavy smoke showing. It was not immediately known if there were occupants in the residence at the time of the fire.

Once HFD crews arrived on scene, they found the residence fully engulfed in flames with the structure beginning to collapse as a result of the fire. HFD crews went into a defensive firefighting mode and worked to gain control of the fire. They also determined residence was unoccupied at the time of the fire. They had the fire under control just after 9:00 pm Tuesday evening and were still on scene completing mop-up and wet down operations as of 9:45 pm Tuesday evening.

Due to the limited water supply at the scene, HFD crews utilized both Tanker 1 and Tanker 10 and also engines at the scene to haul water to the scene from a water supply source outside of the subdivision.

The residence was declared a total loss.
