The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) to a report of a structure fire that broke out at a residence in the Eden Roc subdivision in Puna early Tuesday morning (January 26th).
The initial call came in at 3:18 am Tuesday morning and HFD Crews from the Kea'au, Volcano, Haihai, and Central (Tanker 1) Fire Stations along with Battalion 1, Volunteers from the Fern Acres Subdivision Station, and HPD Officers from the Puna Patrol responded to the scene located at 11-3300 block of Palainui Street.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in from nearby residents reporting a residence (described as a single-story single-family dwelling approximately 1,500-square feet in size) on Palainui Street near Maile Street was reported to be fully engulfed with visible flames and glow seen throughout the Eden Roc subdivision. Neighbors waited for the arrival of emergency crews.
It was later learned the occupant of a residence had passed away the previous week and was not occupied at the time of the fire.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Crews found the residence fully engulfed in flames with parts of the residence beginning to collapse in. HFD crews went into a defensive mode of fire attack to gain control and extinguish the fire. Due to the limited water supply at the scene, HFD Tanker from the Central Fire Station and Engines were utilized to shuttle water to the scene from a water supply source located outside of the Eden Roc subdivision.
HFD crews were able to have the fire under control just after 4:00 am Tuesday morning and commenced with mop-up and overhaul operations of the residence. The fire was declared fully extinguished at 5:34 am Tuesday morning.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
