The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a structure fire at a residence in Fern Forest subdivision in Puna early Monday morning (June 29th).
The initial call came in at 2:16 am Monday morning and HFD crews from the Volcano, Kea'au, Pahoa, and Central Fire Stations along with Battalion 1, Volunteers from Fern Forest Station, and HPD officers from the Puna Patrol responded to the scene located at the 11-1900 block of Leila Road in the Fern Forest Subdivision.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in that a residence (described as a single-story family dwelling approximately 30'x30') was reported to be fully engulfed in flames and spreading to a vehicle on the property. A nearby resident was unable to verify if any occupants were home at the time of the fire.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, first arriving HFD crews from the Fern Forest volunteer station found the structure fully engulfed flames with the roof collapsing into the structure. HFD crews immediately worked to gain control of the fire and prevent any further spread or damage. Crews were able to determine that no occupants were in the structure at the time of the fire.
Due to the location of the fire and limited water supply at the scene, HFD crews had to utilized two tankers from the Pahoa and Central Fire Stations to haul water to the scene from water supply source located outside of the Fern Forest subdivision.
HPD officers later located the occupants of the structure down the road from the fire and uninjured.
HFD crews had the fire under control shortly after 4:00 am and crews continued with wet down and overhaul operations and HFD Fire Prevention Inspectors arrived at the scene and immediately began their investigation to the fire.
The fire caused extensive damage to the residence.
