The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HFD) responded to a report of a dirt bike accident at Sand Hill in Hawaiian Beaches, Puna Monday afternoon (September 14th).
The initial call came in at 2:43 pm Monday afternoon and HFD crews from the Pahoa, Paradise Park and Waiakea (Rescue Company 2) Fire Stations along with Battalion 1, Chopper 1, Chopper 2, and HPD Officers from the Puna Patrol responded to the scene located at Sand Hill in Hawaiian Beaches.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, 911 calls came in from bystanders reporting male party (described as a male age 20) operating a dirt bike had accidentally driven off a 35-foot cliff and landed on a rocky outcrop above the water's edge near Sand Hill. The first male reported have suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of the fall.
A second male party (also described as a male age 18) also operating a dirt bike had stopped near the cliff edges and went to check on the condition of the initial male operator who went over the cliff. However, while looking over the cliff's edge, the terrain the second male party was standing on had given way and also fell down the same cliffside and landing on the rocky outcrop as well. The second male party reported having suffered serious injuries as a result of the fall and bystanders awaited the arrival of emergency crews.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medics and Crews hiked down to the two male parties' location and immediately began life-saving measures and medical care to both patients. Due to the location of the two male parties, HFD Rescue crews utilized a Billy Pugh Net and Rescue Litter lowered from Chopper 1 and extricated both male parties to the landing zone above the cliffside to awaiting medic, where they continue life-saving measures and medical care. However, HFD Medics later ceased all life-saving measures on the first male party and later declared DOA at the scene.
HFD Medics then transported the second male party to the Hilo Medical Center in serious condition for further medical treatment.
HPD continues to investigate the incident.
