South Hilo Information Update for April 17th, 2021

One person rescued off a cliffside near Wainaku Executive Center in South Hilo Saturday evening (April 17th).

The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report initially of a medical emergency that later turned into a technical rescue incident along the cliffside near Wainaku Executive Center in South Hilo Saturday evening (April 17th).

The initial came in at 6:13 pm Saturday evening and HFD Crews from the Central and Waiākea (Rescue Company 2) Fire Stations along with Battalion 1, Chopper 1, and HPD Officers from the South Hilo Patrol responded to the scene located on the cliffside near Wainaku Executive Center in South Hilo off of Highway 19 (Mamalahoa Highway).

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, a report had come in from a third party reporting an individual (described as a male with age range not disclosed) contemplating or expressing suicidal ideations and was reported to be located along the cliffside near the Wainaku Executive Center off of Highway 19 near Downtown Hilo.

Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medic personnel immediately began searching the area along the cliffside off of Highway 19. HFD Chopper 1 and Rescue Personnel later arrived at the scene and later located the male party along the cliffside. HFD ground personnel set up along Highway 19, a technical rescue rope system, and HFD Rescue personnel rappeled down the cliffside and secured the male patient in a rescue harness and brought him up back up to Highway 19, where HFD Medic personnel began a medical assessment of the male party.

HPD Officers had temporarily closed Highway 19 between Hau Lane and Pukihae Street while HFD Rescue personnel completed the technical rescue incident.

No further updates were given on the male patient following being rescued from the cliffside.
