South Kona Traffic Notice for August 16th, 2021

Road work to tentatively begin on the pavement and safety improvement project on Highway 11 (Māmalahoa Highway) in Captain Cook, South Kona on Monday, August 16th, 2021.

Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) - Highways Division crews have begun preparation work on Highway 11 (Mamalahoa Highway) in Captain Cook, South Kona for pavement and safety improvements projects which is currently scheduled to tentatively begin on Monday, August 16th, 2021.


(Date is subject to change based on contractors' completion with paving work at another location and equipment movement to this project site).


Work hours are as follows:


Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm (Tentatively)


Paving Contractor Grace Pacific, LLC will begin to stage paving equipment along Highway 11 near the work area in the coming days in preparation for the start of road work.


The project is expected to take 1 to 2 months to complete (including the striping/installation of safety improvements planned).


Road work will be happening between the following milepost and include the following intersections:


  • Mile Marker 107 to 109.5

  • Between Kealakekua Ranch Center to 'Ohana Warehouse (or Old Ege Store)

  • Intersections of Koa Road, Government Main Road, Kalamalani Street, Nanaina Lani Road, Rabbit Hill Road, and Mahi'ai Road.


Road Work will include the following:


PAVING, INSTALLING MILLED RUMBLE STRIPS IN THE CENTERLINE AND SHOULDER AND UPGRADING GUARDRAIL, PAVEMENT SIGNING, AND MARKINGS.


Motorists who use Highway 11 between Captain Cook to Hōnaunau areas in South Kona are being asked to anticipate delays or use alternate routes to avoid delays.


All road work will be weather permitting.
