The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a residential structure fire in the Royal Hawaiian Estates subdivision in Volcano, Puna late Monday evening (September 29th).

The initial call came in at 11:20 pm Monday evening and HFD crews from the Volcano, Kea'au, Pahoa (Tanker 10), and Central (Tanker 1) Fire Stations along with Battalion 1, Volunteers from the Volcano Village Station, and HPD officers from the Puna Patrol responded to the scene located at the 11-3100 block of Pa Ali'i Street in the Royal Hawaiian Estates subdivision in Puna.

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in from nearby residents reporting residence (described as a single-story residential dwelling on post and pier) located on Pa Ali'i Street near Ali'i Kane Street in Royal Hawaiian Estates was reported to be fully engulfed in flames and occupants of the residence had safely evacuated and were uninjured.

Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, first arriving HFD crews found smoke and flames coming from the residence and immediately worked to gain control of the fire and prevent further spread to several nearby residences. Parts of the structure had collapsed and due to safety concerns, HFD crews went into a defensive mode of fire attack.

Water supply was very limited at the scene and HFD crews utilized two HFD Tankers, several Type I Fire Engines, and Volunteer Fire Engine to shuttle water to the scene from a water supply source located near Volcano Village.

HFD crews had the fire under control early Wednesday morning (September 30th) and HFD crews continuing with overhaul and wet down operations to remnants of the structure.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
