The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a three-vehicle collision on Highway 190 (Hawai'i Belt Road) in Waikoloa, South Kohala Monday evening (August 16th).

The initial call came in at 7:12 pm Monday evening and HFD Crews from the Waikoloa, Waimea, and South Kohala Fire Stations along with Battalion 2 and HPD Officers from the South Kohala Patrol responded to the scene located on Highway 190 approximately 1/2 mile north of Waikoloa Road (Highway 191) junction in Waikoloa, South Kohala.

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in that three vehicles (all being described as older model Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Matrix, and Toyota Camry) were involved in a head-on/chain reaction type collision on Highway 190. In the course of the collision, the force of the collision caused two vehicles to roll over and land on their rooftops with major damage to both vehicles. The third vehicle involved remained upright but suffered major damage as well. The driver of the Toyota Tacoma (described as a male in his 20s) was unable to safely get out, however, was conscious and alert, while operators and occupants of the Camry and Matrix (all being described as a male in his 20s, two females approximately in their 20s, and two male children under the age of 10) were all able to safely self-extricate with the assistance of bystanders. Bystanders at the scene then provided basic medical care until emergency crews arrived at the scene.

Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Crews worked to extricate the male operator from the Tacoma, and HFD Medic personnel began triaging patients at the scene. Once all patients were triaged, a total of six (6) patients were then transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital with their conditions listed from Fair (Good) to Serious.

Due to debris and the vehicles blocking Highway 190, HPD Officers closed both lanes of Highway 190 between Old Saddle Road and Waikoloa Road temporarily while HFD Crews and tow trucks worked to clear the scene.

HPD continues to investigate the incident.
