The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a structure fire at a residence inside the 'Āinamalu Subdivision in Waikoloa Beach Resort Community in South Kohala Friday evening(August 6th).
The initial call came in at 9:25 pm Friday evening and HFD Crews from the South Kohala, Waikoloa, Waimea, and North Kohala Fire Stations along with Battalion 2, HFD Prevention Bureau, and HPD Officers from the South Kohala Patrol responded to the scene located at the 69-9200 block of 'Āinamalu Street in the 'Āinamalu Subdivision.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in as a structure fire at a residence (described as a single story, 3 bedrooms, 2,200-square feet residence) on 'Āinamalu Street with the garage fully engulfed in flames and slowly spreading to the main living area of the residence. The two occupants inside the residence at the time of the fire had safely evacuated prior to the arrival of emergency crews and awaiting their arrival.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, Company 14 and Battalion 2 were first on scene for a garage fire spreading to the main house. Upon arrival, 35% of the home was involved and all occupants were confirmed out of the residence. HFD crews were brought under control with an offensive interior attack. The fire damaged approximately 45% of the original structure. High winds contributed to the rapid-fire expansion. Additional HFD Crews arrived at the scene and assisted with salvage and overhaul.
The scene was turned over to Inspectors. The occupants of residence had denied assistance from Red Cross.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
