The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of a missing diver in waters offshore of the Mauna Lani Bay Resort late Friday evening (February 12th).
The initial call came in at 11:38 pm Friday evening and HFD crews from the South Kohala and Kailua (Rescue Company 7) Fire Stations along with Battalion 2, Chopper 2, and HPD Officers from the South Kohala Patrol responded to the scene located at Makaiwa Bay.
Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in from bystanders reporting a missing diver (described as a male in his 40s) was reported to have last been seen approximately 100 yards offshore of the Mauna Lani Bay Resort. Bystanders were unable to locate the diver and awaited the arrival of emergency crews.
Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD personnel began a ground search of the immediate area surrounding Mauna Lani Bay Resort and later located a dive light shining in the water approximately 200 yards offshore with no movement. Chopper 2 later confirmed the sighting and reported it to be in shallow waters. HFD personnel on the beach later used two paddleboards to reach the location of the diver and brought the diver back to awaiting HFD Medic and personnel.
HFD Medic did a medical assessment of the diver, however, later they declared the patient DOA (Dead-On-Arrival) and was later transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital, where an official pronouncement of death was made.
HPD continues to investigate the incident.
