The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) along with the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) responded to a report of an apparent near-drowning at Mauna Lani Beach in Waikoloa Sunday afternoon (October 18th).

The initial call came in at 12:12 pm Sunday afternoon and HFD crews from the South Kohala Fire Station along with HPD Officers from the South Kohala Patrol responded to the scene located at Napua Beach near the Mauna Lani Beach Clubhouse.

Upon the arrival of emergency crews, reports came in that a beach patron (described as a female in her 30s) was found in the water unresponsive and bystanders had brought the party out of the water and immediately began life-saving measures on the beach. Shortly after being pulled out of the water and life-saving measures were started, the patient was reported to be responsive and breathing, bystanders were awaiting the arrival of emergency crews.

Once emergency crews arrived at the scene, HFD Medics immediately took over medical care of the female patient and later transported the patient to the North Hawaii Community Hospital in critical condition (initially in serious condition, however, later downgraded to critical condition during transport to the hospital).

HPD continues to investigate the incident.
