Update at 12:00 pm, the Hawaii Police Department (HPD) reports one lane of Kawaihae Road is open and officers are contra-flowing traffic near the scene located at the 62-mile marker. The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) crews were safely able to secure the scene and stabilize the chemical in the tanker. Thus, allowing for the temporary reopening of one lane of traffic.
Tow trucks that arrived on the scene earlier were not able to upright the trailer and crews have requested the assistance of a large crane. HPD and HFD crews are awaiting the arrival of a large crane from East Hawaii to the scene to help upright the tanker resting upon the hillside. Once crane arrives on the scene, Kawaihae Road will have to be closed to traffic when that work is underway. No ETA was given when that will happen, but most likely happen later this afternoon.
