West Hawaii Weather Advisory for May 1st, 2020

Notice Level: Advisory (Information Update Needed)


The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a wind advisory for the South Kohala district of the Island of Hawaii until 6:00 pm this evening (Friday, May 1st). Strong tradewinds up to 35 mph with stronger gust up to 50 mph are expected through this evening.

WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM HST THIS EVENING... * WHAT...Northeast winds 25 to 35 mph with localized gusts over 50 mph. * WHERE...Portions of Maui and Hawaii Counties. * WHEN...Until 6 PM HST this evening. * IMPACTS...Winds this strong are capable of downing trees and causing power outages. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Motorists should use extra caution due to challenging driving conditions.

  • Kohala Estates (North Kohala): Winds of 9 mph with gust of 14 mph.

  • Kamuela (Waimea): Winds of 27 mph with gust of 33 mph.

  • Waikoloa Village: Winds of 28 mph with gust of 28 mph.

  • Kapa'au (North Kohala): Winds of 10 mph with gust of 15 mph.

  • Upper Kohala Ranch (near Kahua Ranch): Winds of 10 mph with gust of 14 mph.

Utility Updates:


Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) - Hawaii Island, Spectrum, and Hawaiian Telcom reports no outages or issues for the South Kohala district, however, advised that outages/issues can occur without notice and ask residents be prepared.
